Seattle – Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell released the following statement:
“The acts of terrorism taken by Hamas militants toward innocent civilians in Israel are horrifying and unjustifiable, and I join leaders around the country and world in condemning this heinous assault in the strongest possible terms.
“Seattle stands in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors during this difficult time and will not allow this attack to prompt acts of antisemitism in our own city. Too often, after international incidents of hate, there are ripple effects where communities are targeted in our neighborhoods. The Jewish community in Seattle deserves to feel safe at home, even while so many suffer pain as they continue to watch what is unfolding overseas.
“In response to these attacks, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) will be increasing patrols around places of worship in Seattle to ensure the safety of those gathered to worship, pray, and mourn the lives lost. SPD is also actively coordinating with local Jewish organizations to monitor and respond to any threats and will be present at the planned vigil tonight.
“My prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims of this devastating violence.”
