Queer Artists Q &A: The ART of Culture

Nayeff Hrebid
Visual Artist
Seattle, WA

What mediums do you use for your art?

I use different mediums for my art. Over the last five years, I have particularly enjoyed working with
wood. I explore various techniques, such as painting on wood, coloring and assembling pieces of wood,
and wood burning.

What is your core inspiration for your art?

My inspiration primarily comes from nature, cultural colors, and the LGBTQ+ community.

What do you think your role as an artist is in the community?

My role as an artist in the community is to convey messages through my art that inspire and engage
people.

What would you like to see happen in the art world to include the LGBTQ+ community more?

As an LGBTQ+ artist, I would like to see more stories from the LGBTQ+ community being
highlighted, especially those that are often hidden. It’s important to share the experiences of being gay
or lesbian with the world.

How has art impacted your life?

Art brings me joy and makes me feel alive, especially now that my husband and I are safely living
together. It deepens my enjoyment of art and allows me to create beauty inspired by love.

Who are your favorite artists?

One of my favorite artists is Michelangelo, known for his statues that beautifully depict the male form.

Where can people see your art?

You can mostly find my art on my social media. I also have plans to open a gallery in the future.

What does it mean to be a queer artist to you?

Being a queer artist means adding a unique perspective to the art world. It allows me to create more
vibrant and colorful art by interpreting the world through a queer lens and sharing that vision with
others.
