Name:
Kaio Wilker
Profession:
Hair Colorist, Stylist & Salon Owner
Company:
Kaio Wilker Salon, Seattle, WA
How did you get started working in this industry?
My mom had a small hair salon in front of our house in Brazil when I was a child. I guess everything really started there. Being surrounded by beauty and creativity from such a young age inspired me to follow this path.
What evolution within your work have you seen that makes you excited to see more?
I started with a need to create and make people feel beautiful, but now, more than ever, I see my work as building confidence and truly connecting with others. Every client has unique needs, and my passion is figuring out what those are and showing up for them in the best way possible.
What role has the LGBTQ+ community had on your work?
The LGBTQ+ community has absolutely inspired me to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone. It has also challenged me to redefine how I approach hair, focusing on the individual and creating a style that reflects how they see themselves and feel. It’s all about helping people express who they truly are.
What advice do you have for our community to utilize what you do even more?
Be open to collaborating with your stylist. Share your ideas and inspirations—whether it’s from art, nature, or your own journey. Let us help bring your vision to life and enhance your confidence.
Who or what inspires you?
Everyday people inspire me, as do both old and new art. I also find inspiration in nature, movement, and the stories of each person I meet—who they are and who they aspire to become.
When it comes to the entire beauty/fashion/etc. industry, where would you advise someone to start who has never really focused on it before for themselves?
Start by working in a reputable salon under experienced professionals. Take your time as an assistant; it’s an opportunity to learn not only technical skills but also who you want to be in the industry. Work with a variety of mentors, as each one will teach you something different—about both the craft and yourself.
What is a must-do or a must-have that you think everyone should do/have?
Enjoy the journey, and take care of yourself as you grow. Focus on learning and improving your craft, but don’t forget to have fun and nurture other areas of your life. Most importantly, if your work environment isn’t serving you—if you’re not growing or happy—it’s time to explore other options. Keep moving, flowing, and growing.
Do you have any simple steps or things that you can recommend for people to do that they can implement into their routines?
Eat well, stay hydrated, and find a doctor you trust to monitor your health, including your hormones and blood work. Your hair responds to your overall health, so by taking care of yourself, your hair and skin will be the best they can be.
What is your biggest mistake (beauty/fashion-wise), and how did you learn from it?
Staying in a toxic environment for too long, trying to create positive change in a place that no longer served me. Sometimes, when you’re in the wrong place, the best thing you can do is move on. Find an environment where you can thrive, and pour your energy into work that makes you happy.
