When I first heard about Mimosas Cabaret at Unicorn, I thought I knew exactly what I was in for: a drag show? A cabaret? The idea of a drag brunch is certainly nothing new, but there was something about this take that felt fresh and innovative. After over a decade of sold-out performances, it’s clear the audience agrees.
From the moment I stepped into the venue, it didn’t take long for both me and the rest of the audience to fall head over heels for the host, Izzy Access. This towering glamazon of a performer not only takes on the role of host but also writes and directs these 35-minute mini-musicals that showcase the perfect mix of campy fun and sharp parody. The show takes stories from pop culture, turns them on their head, and adds a layer of irreverent humor only a drag show can provide.
One of the best parts of Mawma Mia is the sheer talent of its performers. Opening the show, we are introduced to the diverse group of performers: Izzy Access, Ruby Bouche, Louvel, Issa Man, and Manny Manstands in a traditional but elevated way, showing how each of them brings something special to the table. There are standout vocal performances from Izzy and Louvel, showcasing their vocal chops, while Manny Manstands wows the crowd with a spectacular burlesque-style routine that leaves the audience cheering for more. I cannot review this without mentioning the incredible drag king, Manny Manstands, who brings so much to every scene they’re in. With a dynamic presence and perfect comedic timing, they add unique energy to every moment. What really sets this show apart, though, isn’t just the individual performances but the entire production.
The atmosphere of the venue is integral to the experience. Presented on a real stage (as opposed to the more typical drag brunch format), this setup allows the performers the freedom to move, interact with the audience, and fully immerse us in the world they’ve created. The lighting, designed by Bouche herself, is simple but effective, setting the tone for the fast-paced nature of the show while giving it a polished, professional feel. While many drag shows focus solely on the performers doing numbers to entertain, Mawma Mia delivers a more intimate experience, allowing for moments that feel genuine and deeply connected with the audience.
Bouche and Louvel are nothing short of impressive, playing multiple parts throughout the show and managing costume changes seemingly every five minutes. What makes Bouche’s performance even more remarkable is her multi-talented involvement behind the scenes. Not only is she an incredible performer, but she also created the projections and did all the sound editing for the mini-musical. This level of artistry and dedication elevates the show to another level. Louvel’s solid theater training is equally important, bringing a level of professionalism and structure that acts as the glue holding Mawma Mia together.
And then, of course, there’s Mawma Mia itself—a drag parody of the beloved musical Mamma Mia. In just 35 minutes, this production cleverly condenses the story of the mega-hit musical into a whirlwind of quick changes, catchy songs, and delightful choreography. Izzy plays Donna, our mother of the bride who’s never been a bride, and commands the stage with ease. The entire ensemble is a well-oiled machine that delivers laugh-out-loud moments, high-energy performances, and a slew of sing-along hits. You’ll be tapping your feet and singing along before you know it.
While drag brunches can often be pricey, with some costing upwards of $50, Mawma Mia at Mimosas Cabaret offers so much more than just a show. It’s an experience—an experience that immerses you in a fast-paced, high-energy world of talented queens (and a king) who not only know what they’re doing but clearly love doing it. The show provides a perfect balance of humor, heart, and spectacle, and it’s a must-see for anyone in the Seattle area looking to experience drag at its finest.
In short, Mawma Mia delivers everything you want in a drag brunch—and more. In an oversaturated market of drag shows, this is worth every penny. If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, I highly recommend you get your tickets because they sell out quickly.
Access’s witty and humorous storytelling is top-notch, adding a delightful layer to this unforgettable Sunday brunch experience. If you have the chance, don’t miss Mawma Mia, now running through April 20th, 2025. After that, they will open The Wicked Wiz of Oz on April 27th, 2025, running through August 27th, 2025.
