What is your pride and joy in life?
My lifelong friends, my family and of course my pets, my friends’ pets, the pets I pet sit, the pets in the park, etc. Did I mention the pets???
What do you feel thankful for about our LGBTQ community?
Ah, the gay community! Where would we be without the gay community??? As someone who works in the arts, my career has dramatically been influenced and inspired by the gay community. I wouldn’t have a career without the gay community. When the gays move in to an area, you know there is gonna be culture, art, fashion, great shopping, music. Who doesn’t love that???
My parents used to live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which is enormously gay. There was a woman who lived in the upstairs condo who complained that their rainbow umbrella on her patio was “attracting the wrong crowd”. My mother’s angry retort was “I’ll have you know that the gays are the only subletters who deadhead the plants by the pool, play the best music, and look fashionable. The rainbow umbrella stays”!
Who inspires you to make a difference in the world?
People with integrity. People who fight for real justice. People who speak their minds and do the right thing even though there may be a backlash. People who feel the fear and do it anyway.
What are the dreams you still want to accomplish?
Performing wise, there are so many roles I still want to play. Personally, there is so much more traveling I want to do. One being an African Safari……but I want the animals to behave themselves when I’m there and just eat grass because I don’t want to see the “circle of life” so to speak up close.
And I’ve always wanted to own a bright pink stucco Spanish style house with a pool and a cabana boy. It’s on my manifestation board.
What hopes do you want to see come true for the younger generation?
I want them to do better than we have. To continue to fight for equality for all. To get involved politically. To make a difference even if that difference doesn’t affect them directly.
How do you stay grateful for what you have?
I daily try to find a quiet moment at home or when I’m in my car to say out loud the things, people, etc. that I am grateful for. Even in difficult times, there is always something that you can be grateful for. Sometimes it’s as simple as a good sandwich, my cats, an impeachment.
What encourages you to make tomorrow better than today?
Well, “today” is pretty challenged politically.
Every day that lunatic is president there is another travesty, injustice, or outrage that occurs.
In my mind, I have to hope and work for change. I can’t live in a country that is destroyed by greed and insanity. I picket, I do phone banks, I write postcards, I go to rallies. I can’t sit idly by and complain about issues.
What is one thing you are proud of yourself for?
That I choose a line of work of performing that is so uncertain, unpredictable, and competitive but I went into it wholeheartedly because it was my passion. No matter the outcome, no regrets. I never wanted to say, “I wish I would have…..”.
