Sam Adams, 1st Gay Mayor of a PNW Major City (Portland, OR)
What is your pride and joy in life?
A pride and joy in my life is my family, and at the heart of it is my husband, Peter. He’s a remarkable person—kind, funny, and smart. I feel truly fortunate to walk through life with someone so interesting and interested in all that life has to offer. Whether in our quiet moments together or when facing life’s tougher challenges, he’s always there, challenging me to grow while keeping me grounded. Having Peter by my side has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
What do you feel thankful for about our community?
I feel deeply thankful for the LGBTQI+ community’s resilience, diversity, and solidarity. What I like most about our community is our continuous effort to foster a space where people can be their authentic selves and find support and belonging. The shared experiences and collective strength in advocating for equality and acceptance create a powerful network of support and empowerment.
Who inspires you to make a difference in the world?
I’m inspired to make a difference in the world by others who dedicate their lives to creating positive change, especially in challenging circumstances. LGBTQIA+ activists and community leaders who work tirelessly in repressive, hostile, and dangerous environments especially motivate me. Their passion, resilience, and commitment to improving the lives of others inspire me to contribute in my own way and strive for meaningful impact.
What are the dreams you still want to accomplish?
Right now, as a public advocate, my focus is on helping the Portland area get back on its feet and move forward for everyone.
What hopes do you want to see come true for the younger generations?
For the LGBTQIA+ community, I hope to see younger generations worldwide grow up and live in a world where legal and lived equality and inclusion are the norms, not the exception.
How do you stay grateful for what you have?
I stay grateful for what I have by regularly taking time to reflect on the many positives in my life. I find moments to appreciate the support of my loved ones, the opportunities I’ve been presented, the people who’ve helped me along the way, and simply having another day to be here. I try to give back to others and contribute to causes that matter to me, which helps me recognize and value the good things in my own life.
What encourages you to make tomorrow better than today?
Our collective ability to solve problems and unlock untapped opportunities is more achievable than most people realize. Yes, it can be exhausting and hard work, but it’s more doable than many imagine. This belief keeps me going, knowing that through hard work, action, courage, and collaboration, we can solve problems and make real progress.
What is one thing you are proud of yourself for?
I grew up in a very anti-gay environment, and that kind of experience can leave a lasting imprint on a child’s identity. But I’ve worked hard to turn those early challenges into positives and fuel for a lifetime of public service. It’s given me a deeper sense of purpose and a drive to make myself and my little part of the world better. I’m still very much a work in progress, and I always will be, but the effort has been more than worth it.
