Celebrating People Q & A: Sherry Harris

Sherry Harris, first openly gay person and first African American woman elected to the Seattle City Council.

What is your pride and joy in life?

My pride and joy come from the meaningful connections I’ve made with others, especially the chance to work with talented individuals on projects that truly make a difference in the community. I find joy in seeing the results of collaboration and innovation, knowing that our efforts create lasting, positive change in the world.

What do you feel thankful for about our community?

I’m incredibly thankful for the sense of unity and purpose in our community. Whether it’s in the GLBTQ+ space or among friends and neighbors, there’s always a willingness to support one another and work together toward common goals. This collective spirit of collaboration inspires me every day.

Who inspires you to make a difference in the world?

I’m inspired by those who quietly work behind the scenes, tirelessly dedicating themselves to making the world better. Whether it’s an activist going door to door, a teacher nurturing young minds, or someone developing technology that improves lives, these unsung heroes remind me that positive change can start with just one person.

What are the dreams you still want to accomplish?

I dream of creating a world that works for everyone, with nothing and no one left out—a world where our differences no longer cause division, and where we agree to meet the basic needs of all people. These principles have been at the heart of every activist cause I have ever worked on. There’s a deep satisfaction in knowing that the work I do can leave a lasting impact for future generations, and I’d love to accomplish more in this realm.

What hopes do you want to see come true for the younger generations?

I hope the younger generations grow up in a world where creativity, collaboration, and compassion drive progress. I hope they inherit a society that values diversity of thought, encourages innovation, and embraces the responsibility we all have to protect and improve the world around us.

How do you stay grateful for what you have?

I stay grateful by reflecting on the journey I’ve taken, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the incredible people I’ve met along the way. Regularly reminding myself of the opportunities I’ve had and the lessons I’ve learned helps keep my perspective grounded and my gratitude strong.

What encourages you to make tomorrow better than today?

The belief that even small improvements can lead to significant change motivates me. Knowing that each day brings a new opportunity to grow, learn, and contribute to the world in a meaningful way keeps me striving to make each tomorrow brighter than today.

What is one thing you are proud of yourself for?

I’m proud of my perseverance and commitment to always lean toward solutions. No matter the obstacles or challenges, I’ve remained dedicated to my goals and values, constantly pushing myself to do better and be better. This dedication has allowed me to achieve success in both personal and professional arenas, and that’s something I hold with pride.
