What is your core inspiration for your art?
Almost anything, people, places, culture, politics, random objects. I never know where it might come from next. Everything inspires me but most people aren’t going to be interested in 99% of what goes through my head, so there is a LOT of editing.
What do you think your role as an artist is in the community?
I believe artists are people first and I have a responsibility to participate in my community. Art can inform, inspire, and even change people and I must use it for the betterment of humanity, to speak out against injustice, to bring joy where it is needed, and examine the truth about the world around me.
What would you like to see happen in the art world to include the LGBTQ+ community more?
I would love to see more communal spaces where we can feature LGBTQ+ art and artists. Physical public spaces where we can experience both art and community. Public Cinemas, Museums, Parks, Stages, and other performance venues.
How has art impacted your life?
It made my life bearable when I was young, and now I teach it, hoping it can help the next generation.
Who are your favorite artists?
I’ll stick with my medium of film, Lino Brocka a queer Filipino filmmaker and my great uncle. I never met him but am continuously inspired by his art, his politics, and his legacy fighting for change in the Philippines. John Waters, his films were the first non-studio films I had ever seen. My eyes were suddenly opened to what film could be about and WHO. They could be about anyone… even me. Cheryl Dunye, her storytelling, activism and dedication to uplifting other voices, are so inspiring to me.

What does it mean to be a Queer artist to you?
It means everything to me. It has given me community, family, and hope in dark times like these. Hope that we can work together to make change.
