How did you get started working in this industry?
I started right out of high school. I used to cut kids hair in high school. Then went right into beauty school after I graduated.
What evolution within your work have you seen that makes you excited to see more?
People are getting more comfortable doing their hair but for Seattle people tend to like a casual lived in look that’s very low maintenance.
What role has the LGBTQ+ community had on your work?
In the past I used to belong to the GSBA which is amazing in how they support gay youth. It is a great organization.
What advice do you have for our community to utilize what you do, even more?
The best way to start out in the industry is find a school that you respect and has a good reputation. It can be a very rewarding career. Making people feel good about themselves and a wonderful feeling.
What is a must-do or a must-have that you think everyone should do/have?
A must have is a good salon quality shampoo and conditioners. A good volumizer and smoothing lotion depending on the style you like. Also, most salon products are cruelty free.
Do you have any simple steps or things that you can recommend for people to do that they can implement into their routines?
If you have curly hair you don’t need to wash every day, your natural oils keep the frizz at bay. Regular trims keep the hair at the peak of health. This also keeps it from splitting which allows it to grow longer if you so desire.
What is your biggest mistake (beauty/fashion-wise), and how did you learn from it?
Starting out everyone makes mistakes so it’s important to see what went wrong and never do it again . All part of the growth process. The Sooner you Book the Better you’ll Look!!!
